Depicts ants as social creatures living in complex societies. Shows ways they control their environment. Ken Smith sez: This is probably the most genuinely entertaining of all the John Kieran's Kaleidoscope films. The poor ants are anthropomorphised to the nth degree; we even hear The Wedding March when the queen and her drone fly away from the nest. Kieran's patter has never been more meandering; he sounds like a befuddled uncle narrating home movies. Clumsy but enjoyable. PESTILENCE (ANTS) VS...

North Sea flood in the NetherlandsIn the night of 31 January/1 February 1953 many dykes in the provinces of Zeeland, Zuid-Holland and Noord-Brabant proved not to be resistant to the combination of spring tide and a northwesterly storm. On both the islands and the mainland large areas of country were completely flooded with water. The purpose of this film was to disseminate a report by the BMA in 1935 on the revised principles of treating fractures. The film starts with shots of the waiting room, a young man is then booked by the almoner. The patient goes in to the examination room. With high production values, this film dramatises (or semi-dramatises) the plight of a man, Dan Plover, who has epilepsy. Dan is seen drenched through and destitute as he returns to the National Veterans Epilepsy Center, a place where we are told he felt safe in the past, just three months earlier. In cinematic terms, we find out why Dan has returned to the treatment centre by a series of flashbacks. As a child, Dan had petit mal seizures these are dramatised when he was a school pupil. In...

First, Janet Banzet at a fetish photo session, then a drag queen dominatrix humiliates a submissive slave (perhaps the first film to show this side of the gay subculture), followed by two artfully made montages: a disturbed fetish photographer whipping a prostitute and a final blend of scenes and out takes. First, "The Broken Vase", a rare fetish film by Paris photographer Jacques Biederer. A simple scenario of a clumsy maid getting a hand spanking from her mistress. A workprint is a rough version of a motion picture, used by the film editor(s) during the editing process. Such copies generally contain original recorded sound that will later be re-dubbed, stock footage as placeholders for missing shots or special effects, and animation tests for in-production animated shots or sequences. For most of the first century of filmmaking, workprints were done using second-generation prints from the original camera negatives. After the editor and director approved...

A hidden camera is a still or video camera used to film people without their knowledge. The camera is "hidden" because it is either not visible to the subject being filmed, or is disguised as another object. Hidden cameras are also sometimes used in reality television to catch participants in unusual or absurd situations. Participants will either know they will be filmed, but not always exactly when or where, or do not know they have been filmed until later, at which point they may...

Documentary about public housing in Amsterdam. A socio-economic documentary about housing in Amsterdam. As a result of modern public housing, many older buildings have disappeared. We see shots of the perhaps picturesque, but also poorly-maintained houses, in narrow alleys that sunlight cannot reach. There are shots of the area around the ramparts: the Oudezijds Achterburgwal, Zeedijk, Kattegat, and the Oude Zijds Kolk. The film shows both the harrowing nature of poverty as well as the beauty...

Good example of a pure and simple bondage reel from the '60s with just one girl, nothing more. A busty, pixie-ish blonde struggles prettily in various configurations -- and tries to look troubled. Probably from 1965-66. Note the avoidance of full-frontal nudity with strategic angles and cloth placement. Edited down from a much longer version. This public domain film by unknown makers is included on the "Bizarro Sex Loops 20" compilation disc.

Prime example of a late-1960s (non-porn) fetish stag reel. A latex-clad mistress punishes four slave girls with a rope flogger. Non-stop whipping and spanking action plus obligatory bondage. A bit more serious and consistent in tone than most of the semi-comic shorts in this sub-genre. This public domain film loop has been re-released on "Bizarro Sex Loops #15".

Case study documenting a patient’s treatment for paranoid schizophrenia. Made for health professionals,  Mental Hospital  shows daily life at the state facility, including hydrotherapy and electroconvulsive therapy sessions. The film ends with the patient’s discharge. Note:  Shot at the Central State Hospital in Norman, Oklahoma. Since patients were not legally competent to sign releases, the producer recruited crew and friends for the cast.

In cinematography, night-for-night filming is the name given to the practice of actually filming night scenes at night. In the early days of cinema, before the invention of the proper lighting systems, night scenes were filmed "day-for-night"--that is, they were filmed during the day, and the film was "corrected", either with a polarized lens on the movie camera, or via a variety of post-production techniques. Day-for-night shooting is still used in low-budget films.

The term nostalgia describes a sentimental longing for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.[1] The word is a learned formation of a Greek compound, meaning "homecoming", "pain, ache". It was described as a medical condition, a form of melancholy, in the Early Modern period, and became an important trope in Romanticism.[1] Nostalgia, in its most common form, was responsible for the old front desk of The Beverly Hills Hotel (from 1942 to...

Close-ups are used for distinguishing main characters. Major characters are often given a close-up when they are introduced as a way of indicating their importance. Leading characters will have multiple close-ups. There is a long-standing stereotype of insecure actors desiring a close-up at every opportunity and counting the number of close-ups they received. An example of this stereotype occurs when the character Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, announces "All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm...
